Regular teeth cleanings are vital to maintaining good oral health for your child. At Simply Kids Dental in Colorado Springs, Dr. Sean Vostatek and his caring team prioritize your child’s comfort while ensuring their teeth stay healthy, clean, and cavity-free. You’re in the right place if you wonder what to expect during your child’s teeth cleaning appointment! Here are answers to some of the most common questions about professional teeth cleanings.
Professional teeth cleaning is a routine dental procedure that involves a pediatric dentist or hygienist removing plaque, tartar, and surface stains from your child’s teeth. Unlike at-home brushing, professional cleaning involves specialized instruments and techniques to reach areas difficult to clean effectively. This cleaning helps prevent gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues, ensuring your child’s smile stays bright and healthy.
Yes, during your child’s teeth cleaning, Dr. Sean or a hygienist will use specialized “tools,” or instruments, to clean their teeth. At Simply Kids Dental, we use child-friendly, gentle equipment and child-friendly language to ensure your little one feels at ease during the procedure and knows what to expect. Some of these dental instruments include a dental scaler, or a “spoon,” to remove tartar and plaque buildup; a polishing instrument, referred to as “Mr. Whistle,” to smooth and clean the teeth; and a water spray, or “Mr. Thirsty,” to rinse debris. We strive to provide exceptional care during every visit, and understanding some of our dental terminology will help along the way.
A typical teeth cleaning session at Simply Kids Dental lasts thirty to sixty minutes, depending on the size of your family. The exact time can vary depending on your child’s oral health and comfort level. Younger children or first-time patients may need more time to adjust, but we always ensure that your child feels relaxed and secure throughout the appointment. Our gentle, friendly approach helps make the process efficient, and we want to make sure their first experience is memorable and that any findings are thoroughly explained.
After your child’s teeth are cleaned, it’s important to maintain a regular oral care routine at home. Please encourage your child to brush their teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss once daily. Regular brushing will help prevent plaque buildup and cavities. We may also recommend using a fluoride rinse or a specific type of toothbrush based on your child’s needs. Maintaining a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks will support your child’s oral health.
Your child’s pediatric dentist may suggest additional treatments during the cleaning appointment, depending on their oral health and any future care needed. These could include fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel, sealants to protect against cavities, orthodontic evaluations, or any further dental treatment if required. If any areas of concern are found during the cleaning, your pediatric dentist will discuss the best treatment options, ensuring your child’s smile remains in excellent condition.
