Dental cleanings are crucial for preventive dental care and essential for developing strong, healthy smiles during your child’s formative years. At Simply Kids Dental in Colorado Springs, Colorado, we are often asked if a pediatric dental exam and cleaning every six months is really necessary, to which we emphatically reply, “Absolutely!” It’s an investment in your child’s long-term oral health! Here’s what you should know about routine cleanings.
Young children aren’t known for their exceptional brushing and flossing skills. Even with help from parents, oral hygiene at a young age can be challenging. As a result, it’s easy for plaque to gather on your kids’ teeth, putting them at risk of cavities. Dental cleanings help control plaque, keeping your kids’ smiles strong and healthy over the long haul.
You should schedule your child’s first dental visit after they get their first tooth or around their first birthday, whichever comes first. During this appointment, Dr. Sean will conduct a quick checkup and answer any questions you may have about caring for your infant’s oral health. Regular cleanings can begin around the age of 2 or 3, once more of their teeth have emerged.
We recommend biannual dental visits for checkups and cleanings to monitor your kids’ oral health. If decay or gum disease is an issue, we may schedule more frequent dental visits to get these problems under control.
As dentistry can feel overwhelming for children, Dr. Sean and our team make teeth cleaning a fun, gentle, positive experience. We take the time to explain how teeth are cleaned and show your kids the dental instruments used, so they will know what to expect. Then we’ll gently remove plaque and tartar from their teeth, focusing on areas their toothbrush misses. Lastly, we’ll polish their teeth, leaving them smooth and shiny. Fluoride treatments to combat decay are optional, but highly recommended after a cleaning.
Yes! Baby teeth help your child speak clearly and eat comfortably! They also protect the space for adult teeth to come in! Decay or damage to baby teeth can affect the development of permanent teeth and the outcome of your child’s future smile! Regular teeth cleaning keeps baby teeth healthy, helping your kids until their permanent teeth come in.
Make sure your kids are brushing and flossing regularly, and that they have what they need to keep their teeth clean. Encourage healthy eating habits that limit sugary foods and drinks. Make dental care a priority, so your kids learn the importance of caring for their teeth.
