Pediatric Dentistry

At our office, we believe a child’s first dental visit should be a delightful experience.  While children don’t inherently fear the dentist, understandably, the unknown can be intimidating.  That's why, at our Colorado Springs pediatric dental location, we go above and beyond to ensure a positive atmosphere by using gentle, reassuring language to explain each procedure. From the moment your family arrives, our aim is to establish a warm and inviting atmosphere, ensuring both you and your child feel entirely comfortable.

American Dental Association and the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends...

that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday. This early introduction to dental care is crucial to ensure that your child's newly erupted teeth, which typically emerge between six to 12 months of age, receive appropriate dental attention and that ideal lifelong habits begin early.

When new teeth erupt

Your child's first set of primary teeth typically begins to erupt between six to twelve months of age, continuing until around age three. During this period, gums may feel tender, and to alleviate discomfort, gentle rubbing with a clean finger or a cool, wet cloth is recommended. Teething rings can also provide relief.

Primary teeth are naturally shed at various stages during childhood, with permanent teeth starting to erupt around age six and continuing until age 21. Adults typically have 28 permanent teeth, not including wisdom teeth.

Preventing tooth decay with regular checkups

Regular dental checkups every six months are crucial for preventing tooth decay, as sugars left in the mouth can turn into acid, leading to decay. Alongside proper brushing and flossing routines, fluoride treatments and dental sealants are recommended to maintain tooth strength and prevent decay in hard-to-reach areas. Sealants, while lasting several years, should be monitored during regular dental checkups.
